Yubakami is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas, in the poorest part of the County. We are fortunate to have as our neighbor an extraordinary unpaid public servant, Margaret Fowler, who cobbles together a number of projects to serve the most needy. One of the most consequential is the Seniors on the Go program, which brings people together for activities and nutrition. Yubakami brings fresh produce to their big monthly luncheon (125 grateful attendees in August)
We are now embarking on a Food as Medicine adventure with Harmony Health, to serve as a “Food Pharmacy” for patients who can be prescribed condition-appropriate meals instead of drugs. We are being mentored in this extraordinary opportunity the Recipe4Health folks in Alameda County. Learn more in this video:
Through the good offices of the Yuba Sutter Blue Zones Project, Yubakami has also become the “sourcer” of ingredients for Farm to Fork dinners in the region. Not satisfied with the conventional idea of Farm to Fork (you know, people paying a lot of money to sit in an orchard with rustic tableware), Yuba Sutter has focused on the true meaning: that the food that is lifted by that rustic fork is perfectly in season, was grown within a stone’s throw (more or less) of the table, and was harvested just in time for dinner. Here is a sample of the kinds of dinners our culture puts together: (video from SacBee)
